AUDIOPHILE AUDITION

An essential disc of world premieres that stuns the senses and absolutely delights the ear.

Latvian composer Ugis Praulins has created the best work on the disc, taking eight sections from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Nightingale to make a 30-minute piece of great theatricality and ecstatic utterance, notwithstanding what also amounts to a full-fledged recorder concerto as well. Praulins has a wide and eclectic background that refuses to be pigeonholed, so I won’t try here; suffice it to say that this piece grabs you immediately while also giving the choir an intense workout in choral virtuosity and range, the recorder commenting perfectly along the way.

‘TIS THE (CHORAL) SEASONClassical Corner — 05 December 2011
By Lawrence Schenbeck

And here is another recording worth checking out: Michala Petri, recorder superstar, teamed with the Danish National Vocal Ensemble and conductor Stephen Layton (another Brit!) in four works composed especially for her. The result is The Nightingale from OUR Recordings, another multichannel must-have. Just listen to the first cut:
“My word! That’s lovely!” These books went all over the world / and so in course of time / some of them reached the Emperor / there he sat in his golden chair reading: / “But the nightingale is really the best of all.” (After Hans Christian Andersen)
The rich invention of The Nightingale (music by Ugis Praulins, b. 1957), based upon Andersen’s beloved tale of the emperor and the nightingale, is matched—at least—by the other standout work on this SACD, 2 Scenes with Skylark, on texts by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Ugis Praulins’s The Nightingale is a recent score is an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen’s story of the same name. It is the same tale employed by Stravinsky for his 1917 opera Le rossignol. The story tells of an emperor who rejects the song of a real nightingale for that of a bejeweled mechanical one. However, when the emperor falls deathly ill the nightingale returns and sings, and God is so moved by its song that he leaves and the emperor recovers. Praulins’s musical setting was composed in 2010 for the Danish National Vocal Ensemble and flutist Michala Petri. The Latvian composer is known for his free mixture of influences as wide ranging as heavy-metal bands, folk music, film scoring, and Renaissance counterpoint. These influences all converged in this score creating what one reviewer described as a “continuously changing tapestry of sound that nevertheless hangs together remarkably well, effortlessly expressing the fancy in the Andersen fragments.”

...absolutely essential disc for fans of Michala, choral music, Nordic composers, and contemporary music with a HEART as well as with a 'system.'

Just listening to it on BBC Radio sung by Danish ensemble. Astonishing - very exciting. Brilliant performance too.
Stuart Manger 2011.12.12.

The Nightingale (2011) by the Latvian Ugis Praulins is essentially a 30-minute concerto, consisting of a series of eight colourful tableaux based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of the Emperor and the Nightingale. It demands an astonish choral range of four octaves. The seventh section, ‘The Artifical Bird’, is a marvel of invention, with percussive imitations and multiphonics

“The Nightingale”

AllMusic Review by James Manheim / rating: **** (4 from 5)

Veteran Danish recorder virtuosa Michala Petri gets top billing here, but the Danish National Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of British conductor Stephen Layton, deserves at least equal billing. The main attraction is The Nightingale by Latvian composer Ugis Praulins,

Kammerchor I Vocalisti - Domine Deus (2011)
Contemporary Classical | Rondeau Production | 2011 | 61:52 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log)
Kammerkor I Vocalisti, Hans-Joachim Lustig, conductor
"Ugis Praulins (b. 1957) counts classical music, folk tunes from his native Latvia and progressive rock among his influences. All three are evident in his impressive Missa Rigensis*, composed in 2002. It combines blocks of choral sound with beautiful melodies, effects reminiscent of electronic music and whispered prayers. ... Setting the traditional text in Latin, the piece lends elements of fresh modern harmonic, rhythmic and textural thinking to a polyphonic tradition traceable through the baroque to the Renaissance. The Gloria has a lively, popular appeal, while the opening Kyrie is rich and magnificent; other sections have a simple, hymn-like quality or a pulsating urgency, not unlike minimalism, but without its repetitiveness. The composer's fondness for syncopated rhythms identifies the piece as a modern work, but one respectful of tradition."

I've been listening to this album at least once a month since I got it in December, 2011 - on my iPod, car stereo, etc. It's spectacular. I had never heard Kammerchor I Vocalisti before, so this was my first time listening to the ensemble. They pay a lot of attention to proper text stress, their balance is great, dynamics have high contrast, the vowels line up, everything sounds amazing. I can't wait to go into their catalog and listen to more. The strongest part of this recording, for me, is the Missa Regensis by Latvian composer Ugis Praulins. It's a 35-minute work that shows off everything this choir does well. Do yourself a favor and add this choir and this album to your choral library.

Neue geistliche Musik

02.05.2010

Von Frank Kämpfer

Chöre, biblische Verse und religiöse Sujets begegnen sich in drei aktuellen CD-Einspielungen mit neuer geistlicher Musik zeitgenössischer europäischer Komponisten, die ihrerseits in sehr verschiedene Klangwelten führen - Ugis Praulinš, Irmas Sisaks, Johanna Doderer und Calliope Tsoupaki.

Ugis Praulins, Crucifixus aus Missa Rigensis

The Choir of Trinty College, Cambridge. Ltg. Stephen Layton
CD Hyperion CDA67747, LC 7533

Missa Rigensis contains many wonders, including a buoyant Gloria which vanishes magically into the long acoustic perspectives of the Lady Chapel, Ely Cathedral, where this disc was most sensitively produced and engineered…

"A fascinating collection of choral works … centering on a Mass setting by Latvian Ugis Praulins … These are works of absolutely luminous beauty."
Gramophone
"Soaring melodies, folklike tunes, drones with religious gravity, and stylized speech are all encompassed by these works, the biggest among them being Ugis Praulins' Missa Rigensis - one of the most original and personal settings of the Mass text imaginable. Best of all, this is a disc to live with: There's much to enjoy on first hearing, but all the pieces have dramatic new revelations on subsequent encounters"

Exultation of a flamboyant kind is the subject of Laudibus in sanctis. Specially written for and dedicated to Stephen Layton, it is an example of Ugis Praulinš’s undoctrinaire approach to composition, where ‘everything is possible and nothing is absolute’, an open-hearted attitude Praulinš attributes to his background in rock music. Also from rock music, surely, comes the insistent rhythmic drive of much of the music, while the filigree ornamentation is decidedly Baroque. Baroque, too, is the cast of this extended setting of Psalm 150 as a multi-sectional cantata, as are the sustained antiphonal writing and the solo/tutti exchanges. Yet for all its eclecticism of reference the piece has a compelling unity of purpose which reflects the unceasing joyfulness of the words. The sturdy opening pages are an exhaustive and exhilarating exploration of A minor; throughout the piece the chords are frequently of massive density, yet are never opaque, and for the final exhortation (‘Let everything in the world that feeds upon the air of heaven’) the composer summons up music of dazzling brilliance and abandon.

"My Lovely Flax Field," connects to a distant, more exotic past (RollingStone)

My absolute favorite movement is “Mans daiļais linu lauks” (My Lovely Flax Field) from Uģis Prauliņš “Ziemssvētki Jaunajā Pasaulē”. It has such a wonderful combination of the choral sound, but the starkness of winter with the very simple solo melodic line and then even the accompaniment is very simple and static which really paints an amazing picture of the crispness and bareness of the landscape in winter.
