Following the popularity of our performance last year of the Latvian composer Uğis Prauliņš’ mass written for the Choir of Riga Cathedral, we present a programme exploring more exciting repertoire from the Baltic, which is becoming increasingly well known, following the recordings made by choirs such as Royal Holloway and Trinity College, Cambridge. Even though you may not recognise all the composers, we can assure you of a memorable programme of music!

Gloriana is a Melbourne-based chamber choir founded in 1994 by its director Andrew Raiskumshttp://www.gloriana.com.au/flyers/choirconcerto.pdf
Russian and Baltic composers have long been celebrated for the magnificence of their choral writing. This program brings together three of the most iconic works by Russian and Baltic composers in  recent times.
Sisask's Benedictio is a powerful and hypnotic re-imagining of a primordial runic song. Prauliņš Missa Rigensis, premiered in 2003, receives its second Australian performance in our concert. Featuring the sounds and rhythms of folk music, the Missa Rigensis is at once exhilarating and profoundly original.
Alfred Schnittke's Choir Concerto is unquestionably one of the choral masterpieces of the 20th century, a setting of devotional poetry by the 10th-century Armenian monk Gregory of Narek, the Choir Concerto is music of staggering depth and range. Join a specially expanded Gloriana to revel in these incredible works.

Pro Coro Canada
Canadian premiere of Latvian composer Ugis Praulins’ 2011 oratorio The Nightingale
The opening concert of the 2012–2013 season with our new Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Michael Zaugg features choral music both old and new. Listen to the voice of the choir spin tales of a day at the King’s court, evoking fantasy and imagination. We will feature the Canadian premiere of Latvian composer Ugis Praulins’ 2011 oratorio The Nightingale, as well as the work that inspired our Artistic Director to become a conductor—Holten’s Rain and Rusk and Rosebush, along with guest artist Matthias Maute on recorder.

In its first concert of the 2012–2013 season—and the first under new Artistic Director Michael Zaugg—Pro Coro was honoured to present the North American premiere of Ugis Praulins “The Nightingale” to great acclaim. This performance was presented on CKUA Radio in October and on CBC Radio in November, and has recently been uploaded to the CBCMusic website under its “Concerts in Demand” program.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QglMYNQHuTk

The concert is also the debut of Michael Zaugg, Pro Coroʼs newly appointed artistic director

and principal conductor. Titled Once Upon a Time, the concert adapts texts from Hans Christian Andersonʼs fairytales that have been set to music. They range from Orlando Gibbonsʼ 16th century Cries of London through to Latvian composer Ugis Praulinsʼ contemporary The Nightingale making its North American premiere.

Matthias Maute will accompany The Nightingale, as well as Griegʼs classic Morning Mood, on solo recorder.

“One of my choirs, The Meljon Singers, performed your Missa Rigensis in March this year in Holy Trinity Church, Hermon Hill, South Woodford as part of a programme of contemporary music from Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. We all enjoyed learning and peforming your piece very much and I am sure that it will remain a favourite piece for many years to come.
By including movements from Missa Rigensis as part of a workshop day for the choir Illumination, I hope to bring this fantastic piece to more choral singers in London”.
