The Nightingale (2011) by the Latvian Ugis Praulins is essentially a 30-minute concerto, consisting of a series of eight colourful tableaux based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of the Emperor and the Nightingale. It demands an astonish choral range of four octaves. The seventh section, ‘The Artifical Bird’, is a marvel of invention, with percussive imitations and multiphonics

“Infectious enthusiasm and authority” – The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge

The Trinity body’s make-up meant that audiences could experience a wider variety of repertoire than the standard Tudor regime that occupies nearly all available ground when British choirs with boy sopranos visit. For the night’s first half, the program oscillated between some expected Renaissance elements – Parsons, Byrd, Tallis – and a solid representation of contemporary Baltic and Polish composers such as Ugis Praulins, Urmas Sisask and Pawel Lukaszewski.

The singers took to the contemporary works with an infectious enthusiasm and authority… Conductor Stephen Layton’s Cambridge singers show an admirable discipline – the whole program is sung from memory – and at the centre of their offerings they sang two works of vivid and taxing power.

"...the Gloria by Latvian Ugis Praulins was a given a fast, full-voiced performance, its florid lines interweaving to make tense harmonies and ultimately resolving in a glorious major chord."

DIE NEUE PLATTE / ARCHIV /

Neue geistliche Musik
Von Frank Kämpfer
Chöre, biblische Verse und religiöse Sujets begegnen sich in drei aktuellen CD-Einspielungen mit neuer geistlicher Musik zeitgenössischer europäischer Komponisten, die ihrerseits in sehr verschiedene Klangwelten führen - Ugis Praulinš, Irmas Sisask, Johanna Doderer und Calliope Tsoupaki.
Musik 01
Ugis Praulins, Crucifixus aus Missa Rigensis The Choir of Trinty College, Cambridge. Ltg. Stephen LaytonCD Hyperion CDA67747, LC 7533
