There are a couple of real stand out tracks here, like Prauliņš’ Dievaines  and Eriks Esenvalds' arrangement of Allegri 's Miserere , created especially for this recording.

THE female mezzosoprano voice is one of the most alluring in the vocal spectrum and Latvian mezzo Elina Garanca is one of the best singing today. Few can match her vocal brilliance, the luscious texture of her mezzo that reaches soprano heights and lustrous lower depths. She floats top notes and phrases with expansive ease. She made her name in opera but in this disc she opts for music of “the ineffable”. It includes three settings of Ave Maria by William Gomez, by Vladimir Vavilov (attributed to Giulio Caccini) arranged by her husband, the conductor Karel Mark Chichon who also arranged a Cavalleria Rusticana Intermezzo setting. Dievaines by compatriot composer Ugis Praulins takes pride of place, alongside Peteris Vasks’ compositions Dusi dusi and Paldies tev vela saule. Puccini’s Salve Regina, with Gunther Rost on organ, is also welcome. Garanca is well backed by Latvian Radio Choir and Deutsche Radio Philharmonic, Chichon conducting.

Any recording from the Latvian Radio Choir is worth listening to. Add the voice of the great mezzo soprano Elina Garanca, and you have a Top 10 recording. In addition to works by Gounod, Bizet and Allegri, there are works by Latvian composers Ugis Praulins and Peteris Vasks that just may be the highlights of the album.

As announced earlier today, Elīna Garanča has been distinguished with an ECHO Klassik Award for her 2014 album, Meditation. The Latvian mezzo-soprano’s latest solo recording for Deutsche Grammophon is recognized as the “Solo Recording of the Year” in the category of Voice | Arias and Recitals, and will be presented with a trophy on October 18 in a ceremony at Berlin’s Konzerthaus.
The prestigious ECHO Klassik Award is given in recognition of achievements of German and international artists in classical music.
